Film cameras for beginners: Olympus OM-1

Olympus OM-1
The olympus OM-1 is another all manual 35mm slr, It was introduced by olympus in 1972 and was originally called the olympus M-1 but due to a dispute with leica and the their M series cameras they changed it to OM-1 and later on they made a revision of the camera, the OM-1MD. MD meaning motor drive, the older OM-1's could be used with a motor drive unless they were modified but the newer OM-1MD's could, they are distinguishable by a plate on the front of the camera that says "MD". What sets this apart from many other slr's is it's small light body for it being a fully fledged 35mm slr and it is also being rather quite. Though that being said it doesn't compromise on quality, it has a metal construction and is built to last and it has also been to up mount everest. This obviously is a missive benefit to anyone who is taking size and weight as a big factor in which camera to get.

Specs:
Modes: The OM-1 is fully manual only.

Shutter: The OM-1 has a shutter speed of 1s - 1/1000 plus bulb mode and it also allows you to use a shutter release cable for long exposures or steady shots with lower shutter speeds.

Self timer: It has a self time which allows you to change the delay between 4s - 12s

Iso/asa range: The OM-1 had asa/iso range of 25 - 1600

Hot shoe(flash mount): The OM-1 uses a standard hot shoe.

Flash modes: The OM-1 only has manual flash

Flash sync: The OM-1 has a flash sync (the fastest shutter speed that will sync with the flash) of 1/125th

Lens mount: The OM-1 uses the olympus OM mount which offers a large variety of lenses and great zuiko lenses.

Light meter: The OM-1 has a TTL needle meter whcih is a needle that moves up and down in the viewfinder and once it is hovering in the centre you'll know thw exposure is correct.

Power: It takes one 1.35V mercury battery which is hard//impossible to find but there are replacement batteries and adaptors so you can use other batteries which are easy to find

Motor drive: The older models can not accept a motor without being modified but the newer OM-1MD can accept a motor drive.

Price:

My thoughts:
I think this another great, very capable camera with all the features one needs to start with and is should be a big consideration for those looking for a smaller lighter slr(as perhaps a travel companion)but don't want to compromise on the quality or specs. The zuiko lenses that can be used with this camera are very highly rated for their optics and aren't hard to find either so there is no worry about buying a camera with a bad lens mount. The battery issue is a slight down side the battery that was made for this camera has been discontinued so you will have to find an alternative although you can just get an adaptor online to use easy to source batteries so it's not a big deal and there are people online who discussing just using hearing aid batteries which you might want to look into if you plan on getting this camera.
